Call for Submissions

Submit your work in the form below (or click here)

Wordcrafters is excited to partner with the City of Eugene to make local writing a (semi)permanent fixture of downtown Eugene—literally! Step Into Comics is a series of graphic stories or essays, to be exhibited in the stairwells of the Parkade Garage, on Willamette Street, and the Eugene Public Library garage. This series builds on the already existing Step Into… exhibit, which features short writing in other media in the stairwells of the Overpark garage.

All comics creators are welcome—individuals or teams, published or unpublished, professional or amateur, any age!

This contest is searching for submissions to fill two needs:
Parkade Comics:

The Parkade exhibit will feature three longer comics, one in each of its three stairwells. Each comic will be 5-10 “pages”: each page will be printed on a separate sign, approximately 2 ft x 3 ft, and hung on the walls of the stairwell.

Submissions to Parkade Comics must follow these guidelines:

  • Submissions must celebrate or reflect on life in Eugene—past, present, or future.
  • They can be in any genre: memoir, essay, all types of fiction, etc.
  • They must be original works, previously unpublished.
  • Submissions must be 5-10 pages in length:
    • The first page must be a title/cover page (included in the total page count)
    • The remaining pages can have no more than 4 panels each.
    • Since each page will be printed on a separate sign, artwork cannot bleed onto the next page.
  • We encourage submissions that are whimsical, upbeat, and/or uplifting. The purpose of the exhibit is to bring some fun to parking!
  • We also strongly encourage experimentation with story form that takes advantage of the arrangement of a stairwell. Your audience will be “stepping in” to your comic at any level, and reading it both forward and backward. Some ideas for experimentation include, but are definitely not limited to: non-linear stories, Rube Goldberg machines, Choose Your Own Adventure Stories.
  • Submissions should be accessible for passersby to read, appeal to a broad audience, and be family-friendly.
EPL Comics:

The EPL exhibit will feature a single short comic, on its one stairwell landing. This comic will be a single page, printed on a single sign, approximately 2 ft x 3 ft.

Submissions to EPL Comics must follow these guidelines:

  • Submissions must celebrate or reflect on the tradition of SLUG Queens in Eugene.
  • They can be in any genre: memoir, essay, all types of fiction, etc.
  • They must be original works, previously unpublished.
  • They must contain no more than 4 panels.
  • Submissions should be accessible for passersby to read, appeal to a broad audience, and be family-friendly.

Submission and Judging Details (for both parts of the contest):

Submission details:

  • Limit 3 submissions per person, total.
  • Submissions must be PDF files of 8.5×11 pages.
  • Submissions should have NO identifying information anywhere in the file.
  • Please complete the full form for each submission.

Judging:

  • All submission will be blind-read by a community judging panel, which will include other local artists and writers, comics studies scholars, and community members.
  • Submitted comics will be judged on execution of craft, accessibility, and how well they accord to the submission requirements.
  • If your comic is chosen, we will contact you during the week of Aug 7.

If your comic is selected:

  • Your work will be printed by the City of Eugene on large-format signs and exhibited in Step Into Comics, in the stairwells of the Parkade Garage or EPL Garage. We will provide you with a proof of the signs before printing, so that you can check spacing, layout, ect.
  • In addition to leaving your literary stamp on Eugene, you will receive a $150 stipend for Parkade Comics or a $50 stipend for EPL Comics.
  • We will work with you to make an interactive supplement to your work. People viewing the comics in the garages will be able to scan a QR code on the signs to access the supplement!
  • You will have the opportunity to also publish your work in a potential coffee-table book that the City is planning, called The Art of Parking. Proceeds from this book will all be donated to downtown causes.
  • We will ask you to sign a contract granting regional first publication rights to the City of Eugene, for the purposes of the garage signs and the potential coffee-table book. You retain all other rights to your work.
