We’ll cover the basics of creating a memorable scene for your novel or short story. You’ll learn the “Eleven Essential Elements of a Scene,” the “Formula for a Winning Scene,” and a lot more. Plenty of handouts and in-class exercises.

MARCH – Making a Scene: Beyond Mechanics

We’ll learn the best way to organize your book using scenes. We’ll explore the secrets of developing character and conflict in every scene, and learn the “Five Best Ways to Begin a Scene.” Plenty of handouts and in-class exercises.

APRIL – Creating Scenes: The Big Picture

We’ll learn how to use scene cards to organize your novel or short story. We’ll learn, through an in-class exercise, how to craft the “Seven Steps to the Perfect Scene.” We’ll examine how the positions of your scenes in the story determines their construction. Plenty of handouts and in-class exercise.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

John Reed’s years as an Army Intelligence officer have given him more than enough background for his four espionage novels: Thirteen Mountain, Dark Forest, Shadow White as Stone and The Kingfisher’s Call.  His unforgettable characters and tension-filled plots are testament to his skill as a master storyteller.  
John is a sought-after presenter at writers conferences on the west coast and Mexico. He also conducts the legendary Pirate Workshop at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. His poetry has appeared in more than 50 literary magazines and journals. He has a master’s degree in Communications and is a member of the International Thriller Writers. John lives and writes in Eugene Oregon.
