Emotional-Thematic Story Telling

A custom, four-week fiction writing course for WordCrafters in Eugene.

Award-winning writer Eric Witchey will lead this hands-on, four week craft intensive. The seminar will use short fiction as the delivery vehicle, but all techniques demonstrated are applicable to novel development. Each participant will fully develop one short story and, muses willing, a second story that will require some revision once the class has ended.

  • Wordcrafters
  • Week 1: Getting started: where to start, when to start, starting.
  • Week 2: Finding the path forward, making structural choices, and making genre choices.
  • Week 3: Techniques for analysis and revision. Thematic impact on scene
  • Week 4: The ending, beginning, and middle examined–in that order. Making
  • word choices line-by-line. Marketing by the numbers.

Explore the relationships between character development, thematic intent, story structures, scene development, dramatic structures, and final nit-picky word choices. Learn tools and processes to apply and develop them. Most importantly, complete one full story (and maybe two!) as you dive into the world of using words to create experiences in the infinite imaginative space that is the reading human being’s mind.
