Be Writing: Wordcrafters 2016 Master Class Retreats

Registration is closed for this event
Wordcrafters will offer two intensive, four-day retreats at the University of Oregon Baker Center prior to our 2016 Writing Festival. These sessions will focus on individual work and provide attending writers with valuable feedback on their craft. Space will be limited to twelve students per retreat class.

Master Class Retreats offer you an intensive learning experience with a small group of serious-minded writers committed to improving and deepening craft. The opportunity to work closely with an award-winning author who is also an expert teacher provides you a foundational shift and leap forward in your writing.

This year, Wordcrafters offers classes in both the novel and short story forms with two award-winning writers. Sessions will focus on individual work and provide you with valuable feedback on your writing. Space will be limited to twelve students per master class.

Building the Novel from Narrative Blocks  taught by Jacquelyn Mitchard

Each novel is a unique machine, but unfortunately fledgling novels don’t come with instructions or diagrams to help put them together. That doesn’t mean you have to build them blind. This master class will help you build your novel from the ground up using narrative blocks to guide its construction. Each day will focus on a different block: Plot and Theme; Scene and Scenario; Characterization and Dialogue; and The Big Finish.

The Art and Joy of Writing Short Stories taught by Nina Kiriki Hoffman

Come play with methods of generating stories, examine short story structure, and—most importantly—write some stories! Learn how to achieve the richness and depth of character and plot to craft stories that leave your readers wanting more. For those writing other-worldly stories, explore how to apply traditional story elements—craft, language, character, and plot—to the specific considerations of science fiction and fantasy writing. You’ll come away with a notebook or laptop full of story starts and ideas, plus a finished story or two.
