Novel Plotting: Get Ready for NaNoWriMo Fall 2017

Novel Plotting: Get Ready for NaNoWriMo

Whether you’re a plotter or a pantser, this fast-paced plotting mashup gives you more than a mere outline. You will learn how structure works as the framework of your story, and you’ll get tools to plan out your novel ahead of time or guide your story discovery as you go.
Using Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, 3-act structure, and a screen-writing card trick, this workshop will guide you through all aspects of planning out your novel so you’ll be ready to focus on writing come November. You’ll also learn some nifty tips and tricks for surviving November’s novel challenge or any novel project.
  • Week 1: Finding Your Character & The Heart of the Story
  • Week 2: Structure, Narrative Arcs, and Charter Development; Plotting ACT I
  • Week 3: The Long Middle: Plotting ACT II
  • Week 4: Story Problems and Subplots: Plotting ACT II
  • Week 5: Knock-out Endings: Plotting ACT III
  • Week 6: Fixing Plot Holes & Problems, Themes, Fast First Drafts, & NaNo Survival Tips
Class members are also invited to informal Write-Ins every Saturday during November. Daryll Lynne will be available for 15-minute plot consultations as a fundraiser for our Young Writers Program.
The workshop will include: weekly readings, in-class and out-of-class writing, and group workshop and discussion in a supportive and inspiring environment. Everyone will read the same novel over the course of the workshop to use for analysis and craft discussion.

Write a novel in a month?

Yes! For the month of November, participants from around the world (affectionately known as Wrimos) gather online and endeavor to write their own 50,000-word novels. It’s a month of enthusiasm, determination, and ferociously fast writing. If you enjoy a challenge, or just need a deadline, the NaNo challenge is for you! Here’s a little more about how it all works.

Do you have to be a Wrimo to participate in this class?

Absolutely not! This class will help you get a head start on your writing project, whether you plan to spend 4 weeks, 4 months, or 4 years writing. The class will deepen your understanding of story structure and how it helps you understand what needs to happen when and why it needs to happen.
